Aimed directly at Beech's successful King Air twin turboprop series, the PA-42 Cheyennes are larger developments of the earlier PA-31T Cheyennes (in turn themselves turboprop developments of the PA-31 Navajo).

The PA-42 Cheyenne III was announced in September 1977. The first production Cheyenne III flew for the first time on May 18 1979 and FAA certification was granted in early 1980. Compared with the Cheyenne II the PA-42 was about 1m (3ft) longer, was powered by 537kW (720shp) PT6A-41 turboshafts and introduced a T-tail, the most obvious external difference between the PA-31T and PA-42. Deliveries of production Cheyenne IIIs began on June 30 1980.

Development and improvement of the III led to the PA-42-720 Cheyenne IIIA, with PT6A-61 engines, a higher service ceiling and revised systems and interior.
The higher powered and significantly faster PA-42-1000 is basically similar to the PA-42-720 except for its far more powerful 745kW (1000hp) Garrett TPE331 turboprops driving four blade propellers. Piper's largest and fastest production aircraft to date, the PA-42-1000 was initially called the Cheyenne IV, before becoming known as the Cheyenne 400LS, and then simply the Cheyenne 400. First flown on February 23 1983, the Cheyenne 400 was delivered from late 1984. Production of the PA-42 ended in February 1993.

PA-42-1000 - Max speed 650km/h (351kt), max cruising speed 594km/h (320kt), economical cruising speed 506km/h (273kt). Initial rate of climb 3242ft/min. Range at max cruising speed 3015km (1630nm), range at economical cruising speed 3500km (1890nm).

Weights  

PA-42-720 - Empty 2900kg (6389lb), max ramp weight 5125kg (11,285lb). 
PA-42-1000 - Empty 3412kg (7522lb), max takeoff 5466kg (12,050lb).

Dimensions  

PA-42-720 - Wing span (over tip tanks) 14.53m (47ft 8in), length 13.23m (43ft 5in), height 4.50m (14ft 9in). Wing area 27.2m2 (293.0sq ft). 
PA-42-1000 - Same except for height 5.18m (17ft 0in).

Capacity  

One or two pilots on flightdeck, with main cabin seating for between six and nine passengers. Typical seating for six in main cabin in corporate configuration.

Production  

Total manufactured 192, including 149 III/IIIAs and 43 400s.

History  

The PA-44 Seminole was developed during the heyday of the GA industry in the mid to late 1970s but fell victim to the depressed market from the early 1980s plus the growing reliability and popularity of high performance big singles. As a result it has been built in only fairly modest numbers.

A contemporary of the Gulfstream GA-7 Cougar and Beechcraft 76 Duchess, the Seminole was conceived in part as a PA-30 Twin Comanche replacement, aimed at the self flying businessperson, plus the twin engine training market. Developed from the mid 1970s, the Seminole is a twin engined development of the PA-28R Arrow series, with the Arrow's single engine replaced by two counter rotating 135kW (180hp) Lycoming O-360s, plus a new T-tail and semi tapered wings. The first flight of the prototype was made during May 1976, and production machines, designated PA-44-180, were delivered from May 1978.

The turbocharged PA-44-180T was introduced from 1980. Aside from turbocharged TO-360s, the Turbo Seminole introduced prop de-icing and an oxygen system. Just 86 PA-44-180Ts were built when Piper ceased production for the first time in late 1981. Piper reopened the Seminole line in 1988, with 30 non turbocharged PA-44s built before Piper once more suspending production in 1990, due to its parlous financial position at the time.

Once again the PA-44-180 Seminole is back in production, with manufacture restarting in 1995, although sales have been relatively modest. Piper currently offers two avionics packages for the Seminole, a standard fit and an Advanced Training Group package.

Interestingly the PA-44 is the only T-tail Piper currently in production, even though in the late 1970s most Piper aircraft had been modified to feature a T-tail.

PA-44-180T - Max speed 363km/h (196kt), max cruising speed 343km/h (185kt), long range cruising speed 293km/h (158kt). Initial rate of climb 1290ft/min. Range with reserves 1520km (820nm).

Weights  

PA-44-180 - Empty 1070kg (2360lb), max takeoff 1723kg (3800lb). 
PA-44-180T - Empty 1116kg (2461lb), max takeoff 1780kg (3925lb).

Dimensions  

Wing span 11.77m (38ft 8in), length 8.41m (27ft 7in), height 2.59m (8ft 6in). Wing area 17.1m2 (183.8sq ft).

Capacity  

Typical seating for four.

Production  

Total Seminole production through to end 2004 amounted to 672, including 86 Turbo Seminoles.

History  

The Malibu Meridian is the first major aircraft program from New Piper Aircraft Inc and is a high performance turboprop development of the popular Malibu Mirage.
New Piper announced development of the Meridian at the 1997 NBAA convention. The aircraft was rolled out at Piper's Vero Beach, Florida facilities on August 13 1998 and this aircraft (an aerodynamically conforming prototype) flew for the first time on August 21 that year. Three further Meridian prototypes will enter the flight test program during 1999. Certification was awarded on September 27 2000, with the first customer delivery on November 7 2000.
The Meridian's most obvious feature compared with the Malibu is its Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-42A turboprop. The -42A has a thermodynamic rating of 901kW (1209shp) but on the Meridian is derated to 373kW (500shp) for takeoff, which allows the engine to maintain max power through to the aircraft's 30,000ft ceiling, giving a 485km/h (262kt) cruising speed.
Major sections of the Meridian's fuselage are common with the Malibu's but the turboprop features a number of significant changes, including a stainless steel firewall, chord lengthening wing root gloves which increase wing area to ensure a relatively low stall speed, increased area horizontal tail and rudder, and increased fuel capacity.

The Meridian also has a completely new instrument panel. Standard equipment includes a three axis S-TEC 550 autopilot which is coupled to the dual 13cm (5in) colour LCD Garmin GNS 530 integrated GPS displays incorporating IFR GPS and VOR/ILS receiver with glidescope, and a Meggitt Engine Instrument Display System comprising dual LCDs presenting engine information (such as torque, temperatures and pressures, propeller RPM, outside air temperature and fuel level at destination and time to destination calculations).

An optional Electronic Flight Display System (EFDS) presents flight information on four Meggitt colour LCDs (two per side), comprising dual primary flight displays and dual navigation displays. Conventional flight instrumentation is standard.

A rival turboprop Malibu is the Jetprop DLX which is a conversion of piston-engined PA-46s. The first 88 conversions are powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34, from the 89th aircraft the 417kW (560shp) PT6A-35 or the lower cost 410kW (550shp) PT6A-21 are installed.

Standard equipped 1471kg (3243lb), max takeoff 2312kg (5092lb).

Dimensions  

Wing span 13.11m (43ft 0in), length 9.02m (29ft 7in), height 3.45m (11ft 4in). Wing area 17.0m2 (183.0sq ft).

Capacity  

Typical seating for pilot and five passengers. Pilot and four passengers with optional entertainment/refreshment console with drinks cooler, storage and VCR and flat panel monitor.

Production  

PA-46T - 212 had been built by end 2004.
DLX - by March 2005, 160 piston-engined PA-46s had been converted.
