Antonov An-10 110 Passenger Turboprop

The AN-10 is the first domestic turboprop intended for transportation of 85-100 passengers. On March 7, 1957 the AN-10 first took-off from “Svyatoshin” airfield. In the process of operation its capacity was brought to 118 seats. It is undemanding to the airfields in comparison with the airplanes of the analogoes type. The aircraft has a high degree of unification with a cargo version (the AN-12 aircraft). Commonality of structural elements reached 86%. The AN-10 had modifications: AN-10A – a passenger 132 seater and the AN-10T – transport one with wooden planking. It was noteworthy with predetermination of widebody airplanes. In 1958 in the world exhibition in Brussels the AN-10 was awarded with a diploma and Big Golden medal for the design.

In 1960 the AN-10 as a four-engine aircraft first performed flight with one working engine. The AN-10 manufactured serially at Voronezh aviation plant. From February 1957 to 1960 120 airplanes were produced. In 1973 it was taken out of operation due to insufficient fatigue strength of the wing centre section panels. Inspired by the Izdeliye N (Izdeliye – article or product) passenger version of the Antonov An-8 the Antonov design bureau developed the Izdeliye U, a four-engined aircraft with similar layout to the An-8, but with increased dimensions and a circular section pressurised fuselage.

The first prototype flew on 7 March 1957, revealing poor directional stability which led to a taller vertical fin, and later to hexagonal auxiliary fins at the tips of the tailplane. From 1958, production aircraft were delivered with the Ivchenko AI-20A engines which boasted a longer service life and comparable performance compared to the Kuznetsov engines.

The aircraft was developed simultaneously with a cargo version Antonov An-12 (more than 1200 built). The specification required the aircraft to be able to operate from unprepared airfields. After an accident due to a lack of pitch manoevrability, stabilizer fins were removed and the aircraft was re-designated the An-10A. The capacity increased to 110 seats.

The type was withdrawn from service in 1972 after an accident that revealed a structure weakness of the wing base. At the same time, her sister Antonov An-12 (that shares 90% of components with An-10) appeared to be very robust and is still in service in many countries. After the withdrawal of An-10, it was replaced by Ilyushin Il-18 and Antonov An-24 initially, then later by Tupolev Tu-134.
